Our flagship project, the Bamboo Prosthetic Leg, represents more than just mobility—it is a symbol of resilience, independence, and sustainable innovation. Designed to be affordable, lightweight, and locally made, it provides a lifeline for amputees in underserved communities. Beyond restoring movement, the project fosters local craftsmanship, creates employment opportunities for young people, and strengthens communities through skills development. When One Boy Lost His Leg, We Built Hope Out of Bamboo

This story begins with Ashenafi, a 19-year-old from a conflict-affected area. Ashenafi lost his father to war. As the eldest son, he was seen as the family’s provider, but in that same conflict, his leg was amputated. Suddenly, he was unable to support his family. Prosthetic legs in Ethiopia are prohibitively expensive, and hope seemed out of reach.

Technology

From a technology perspective, the Bamboo Prosthetic Leg combines traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation. 3D printing technology is used to create precise, customizable components that ensure a comfortable fit for each user.

H.E. Mrs. Muferihat Kamil, Minister of Labor and Skills, visited the National Health Innovation Lab of the Ministry of Health, accompanied by H.E. Dr. Mekdes Daba Feyssa, MD, MPH, Minister of Health, along with esteemed State Ministers and other senior officials. During this visit, we were honored to showcase and present our Bamboo Prosthetic Leg. would like to sincerely thank for the constructive and encouraging feedback provided during the visit, as well as the commitment to working collaboratively and providing the necessary support to strengthening the health innovation ecosystem, enhancing the capacity and skills of health innovators, and promoting startups and entrepreneurship in the health sector.
